Passion Project:
The Sandlot Arena
As an amateur photographer and filmmaker, I’m always looking for a story to tell. I filmed and produced the short trailer below, if only to prove to myself the story is worth telling.
Like so many, I grew up playing sandlot baseball. But in the back alleys of Dubai, playing in the sandlot takes on a much different meaning. On any given Friday, one can find the sandlot filled with spectators watching unsanctioned Pakistani Kushti wrestlers toiling in a long held athletic tradition. They do it for the sport. They do it for the loose change in one’s pocket for a job well done. But mostly, they do it to hold onto home, which is so far away. Someday, I will return to Dubai with camera in hand. And I will tell the stories of my friends: these gladiators in the arena.
